Almost all meters and most machine payment units only allow for one hour parking across downtown. The old assumptions by planners that used to justify this have been shown to be wrong, we need to adapt. Hardly any business meetings are under an hour, so we are forcing people to play the meter game which is not professional. When it comes to attracting retail shopping downtown- the idea that an hour slot keeps traffic turning over is short sighted- in an hour I will visit one store. In a two hour plus spot I can do my main store visit, check out other new nearby stores and grab lunch or a beer. If we make it easier for people to do more downtown we can encourage more activity and sales.
